This is our reading group for anybody who loves to read and identifies as a feminist. But I learned a lot about Bach and he came alive for me.more Though it was interesting I found them a little too much. But what I didn’t like were the many references to the Church and Bible. In some ways it’s a coming of age story wrapped in the sadness of loss. But woven through this flashback of memories is his love and knowledge of music as well as reverence for Bach and his music and performance abilities. Though when describing one awful scene he added humor. He shows the good experiences, such as outings in the forest and the bad ones too. The author describes the characters very well creating personalities you come to know. The description of food was reminiscent of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I was fascinated by the attention to dress and hair and general aura even down to the scents people wore. The details about everyday life of the time brought me into the story. But be ready to be whisked back to that time period when we all lost our freedom that changed our society.more If you liked O’William you will love this one. Intermingled are her beautiful descriptions of the surroundings of every scene. She even touches briefly on political tensions and the sad racial disturbances when lockdown ended.

Her attention to detail is noteworthy, especially when describing characters. I always felt we were having a conversation and it was mostly her talking. But I knew people who begged their kids to move out of Brooklyn and then finally went and picked them up to bring them back to Connecticut. I was lucky to be with my own two daughters in Connecticut. Elizabeth Strout tells the story of that time using her own experience and brings us all back to that time. Then it hit me that this was really happening.
